  1. ATTENTION    When we first 
  2. encounter a member of a class 
  3. with which we are relatively 
  4. unfamiliar, l believe that we 
  5. attend to those global 
  6. properties that distinguish it 
  7. from other classes of objects: 
  8. for the infant, a face as against 
  9. all other things; for the adult, 
  10. one twin face as against all 
  11. other faces; and so forth. We 
  12. "describe" only those 
  13. characteristics to which we 
  14. attend. That, in turn, means 
  15. that the memory trace left 
  16. behind contains no more 
  17. specificity than did the global 
  18. percept.

  20.     In our laboratory, my 
  21. colleagues and I have done an 
  22. experiment on form perception 
  23. that demonstrates this 
  24. hypothesized failure to 
  25. perceive all the subtle nuances 
  26. in a complex figure. The 
  27. subjects saw such a figure for a 
  28. brief period. Shortly thereafter 
  29. they took a test consisting of 
  30. two or more figures, one of 
  31. which was the same as the one 
  32. just seen. The others were 
  33. similar globally but differed in 
  34. specifics. Our subjects did no 
  35. better than chance in selecting 
  36. the correct alternative among 
  37. the shapes illustrated. Yet, 
  38. when they were given an easier 
  39. test in which none of the 
  40. wrong alternatives was of the 
  41. same overall shape as the 
  42. original, the subjects had no 
  43. difficulty in selecting the right 
  44. one. Thus, it is dear that the 
  45. global character of the shape 
  46. was perceived and encoded into 
  47. memory, but the details of it 
  48. were not.
